6 Reasons to Buy Reef Friendly Sunscreen infographic

Approximately 6,000 tons of sunscreen are estimated to impact the globe and, in specific, wash into coral reefs every year. The concentration of chemicals from sunscreens are localized around the typical tourist zones and diving/snorkeling areas. Unfortunately, we’ve seen our coral reefs at an increased risk for dying or bleaching and as it turns out, the chemicals in many popular sunscreens is part of the cause.

At first blush, it’s hard to determine whether or not a sunscreen is actually “reef friendly.” Many labels right now might say they are, but in fact, the opposite could be true thanks to a glitch in the legalities of the term. Instead, it’s best to check the active ingredients out for yourself. Avoiding chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate are crucial.

Check out our infographic on “reef friendly” sunscreens (what they are and how to spot them), as well as a list of sunscreens you can find here at Canadian Pharmacy King. We carry a number of them that are oxybenzone-free, and they’re sure to keep you safe from the sun while protecting the environment. The more you know about the chemicals you put on your body and into the waterways, the better the chance at protecting our coral reefs while protecting your skin.
