Rexulti belongs to a class of drugs known as atypical antipsychotics (or second generation antipsychotics) and is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (such as schizophrenia, depression). It is also used to treat agitation that may occur with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. Brexpiprazole is classified as a novel D2 dopamine and serotonin 1A partial agonist called serotonin-dopamine activity modulator (SDAM). It works by rebalancing dopamine and serotonin to improve thinking, mood, and behavior. Rexulti is not an antidepressant or mood stabilizer, and it is not approved to treat bipolar disorder. There are other medications options such as Abilify, Trintellix, or Zoloft.

The starting dosages of Rexulti for depression is 0.5 mg or 1 mg once per day. Your healthcare professional has decided on the best dosage for you. Rexulti can be taken with or without food. Take the medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

In a study (Brexpiprazole (Rexulti): a new monotherapy for schizophrenia and adjunctive therapy for major depressive disorder – July 2016), S Eaves, JA Rey, found that “brexpiprazole has shown itself to be effective as a treatment regimen for schizophrenia and as an adjunctive treatment regimen for major depressive disorder.”
