Zovirax Ointment (Acyclovir) is a prescription topical ointment used to treat people with herpes simplex virus infections of the lips and face (recurrent herpes labialis), shingles (caused by herpes zoster), and chickenpox. The active ingredient in Zovirax cream is Acyclovir. Acyclovir belongs to the class of drugs called antiviral (topical) drugs. Zovirax exerts its antiviral effect on herpes simplex viruses and varicella-zoster viruses by interfering with DNA polymerase to inhibit DNA replication via chain termination. By this mechanism, Zovirax slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus in the body. Zovirax ointment does not eliminate Herpes simplex virus infection from your body. However, it reduces the severity and duration of cold sore symptoms when they appear.

It would be best not to use Zovirax ointment for any skin infection other than herpes simplex infection. Do not use Zovirax ointment to treat genital herpes infection. Contact your doctor if you have ulcers around your genital area. Avoid touching a cold sore to prevent transferring the disease or making it worse. Carefully apply a thin layer of cream to the affected area, including the outer edges of the cold, sore blisters, as directed by your doctor. If your sore worsens or you notice no improvement, contact your doctor for proper treatment. Do not use more than the recommended dose by your doctor.

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;

Avoid breastfeeding if you have herpes sores on or near your breast. Acyclovir should not be used in children under 12 years of age.
