You should not use Zithromax if you have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to azithromycin or other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics, such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin. To ensure your safety, inform your healthcare provider of any other medications you are taking, any known allergies, and your complete medical history before starting treatment.

Zithromax must be taken exactly as prescribed by your physician to ensure the infection is fully treated and to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. The tablet formulation is generally not recommended for pediatric use. In contrast, the oral suspension is indicated for children 6 months and older with specific conditions, including acute otitis media, acute bacterial sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia. Regarding pregnancy and breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor to evaluate the potential risks and benefits, as the medication should be used only when clearly needed during these times.

During your course of treatment, you may find that you sunburn more easily. It is recommended that you wear protective clothing and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher when outdoors to protect your skin from increased photosensitivity.

There are also several important drug interactions to consider. Zithromax may interact with certain medications, including antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, which can reduce the antibiotic's absorption if taken at the same time. You should also inform your doctor if you are taking blood thinners like warfarin, as azithromycin can increase their effects, or if you are using medications that affect your heart rhythm, such as digoxin or certain antiarrhythmics. Providing a full list of your current prescriptions and supplements will help your healthcare team manage your treatment safely.
