Xifaxanta (Rifaximin) is used to treat traveller’s diarrhoea caused by infections in the intestine. Rifaximin is a type of medication called a rifamycin antibiotic. This medication works by killing the bacteria that causes the infection. This antibiotic acts locally in the intestine and is not absorbed in to the bloodstream in significant amounts.

Common side effects include:
• Abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea, gas, bloating, nausea and vomiting;
• Dizziness;
• Fever;
• Headache
Do not take xifaxan if you are allergic to rifaximin of any of the ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about any medical conditions you may have such as diarrhoea with fever, bloody or watery diarrhoea. Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking including prescription, OTC and herbal medications.
