THEODUR Information

Theodur (Theophylline) is used to treat lung diseases such as asthma and COPD. Theophylline belongs to the class of drugs known as xanthines. It works in the airways by relaxing muscles in the lungs and chest, opening the breathing passages and decreasing the lungs response to irritants. Theodur must be used regularly to be effective. It is not a quick-relief inhaler and it should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems.

Manufacturer Information

We currently have the generic Theodur also called Theo LA from Canada also called APO-Theo LA manufactured by Apotex Inc. The brand Theodur is not available. Theophylline is available in the strength of 100 mg, 200 mg and 300 mg sustained-release tablets.

THEODUR Side Effects

You should check with your doctor if these side effects persist or get worse:

• Diarrhea;
• Headache;
• Increased urination;
• Irritability;
• Nausea or vomiting;
• Nervousness;
• Restlessness;
• Shaking;
• Stomach or abdominal pain;
• Trouble sleeping

Contact your doctor immediately if you see any of the following side effects:

• Confusion;
• Dizziness;
• Fainting;
• Fast, slow or irregular heartbeat;
• Nausea or vomiting that doesn’t stop;
• Seizures

Consumer Precautions

You should not take Theodur if you are allergic to Theophylline or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Seniors and children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication so they should be monitored carefully. This medication should only be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. This medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. There may be a drug interaction between Theophylline and other medications such as riociguat, cimetidine, disulfiram, fluvoxamine, interferon, mexiletine, propranolol, rifampin, carbamazepine or phenytoin, etc.
