Surmontil (Trimipramine) is used to treat depression. Using this medication will help improve your mood, and help you enjoy everyday life. Surmontil belongs to a class of drugs known as tricyclic antidepressants. It works by restoring the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Surmontil may include abnormal liver function tests, breast swelling, dry mouth, increased blood pressure, itching, nausea, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, rash, and vomiting.

Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
• A seizure;
• Chills, fever, sore throat or mouth sores;
• Confusion or unusual thoughts or behavior;
• Easy bruising or unusual bleeding;
• Eye pain or swelling, tunnel vision, or seeing halos around lights;
• Feeling light-headed, like you might faint;
• Fluttering in your chest, pounding heartbeats;
• New or worsening chest pain;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw, or neck

You should not use Surmontil if you are allergic to Trimipramine or if you are allergic to other antidepressants or if you recently had a heart attack. You should not use this medication if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Inform your doctor if you have used an "SSRI" antidepressant in the past five weeks. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history and if you have ever had:
• Bipolar disorder or schizophrenia;
• Diabetes;
• Heart attack or stroke or heart disease;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Mental illness or psychosis;
• Narrow-angle glaucoma;
• Overactive thyroid;
• Problems urinating;
• Seizures

Drinking alcohol with this medication can cause side effects. Surmontil may cause blurred vision, or make you dizzy or may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Surmontil and other medications. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Limit your time in the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
