Septra (Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections. Bacterial infections can occur in any part of the body. Bacteria is often transmitted to humans through air, water, food, or living vectors. Septra is used to treat ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler’s diarrhea, pneumocystis-type pneumonia, and shigellosis. The active ingredients in Septra are Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim belong to a class of drugs called antibiotics. They work by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. This drug passes into breast milk, and it may affect a nursing infant. Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Septra is a tablet. Take the drug by mouth with a full glass of water. If you experience stomach upset, take the drug with food or milk. Drink plenty of fluids when using Septra. Continue this medication for the full prescribed period, even if your symptoms disappear. Stopping the drug too early may cause a return of the infection. Septra can increase your sensitivity to the sun. Wear protective clothing and use sunscreen when you are outdoors. Store at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
