This product belongs to the class of medications known as estrogen replacement therapy. It is used to treat the vaginal symptoms of menopause, such as dryness, burning, irritation, and painful sexual intercourse. This medication contains a mixture of estrogen hormones. Estrogen is a female sex hormone produced by the ovaries. Most postmenopausal women may experience postmenopausal vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA, or atrophic vaginitis), which is thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls that may occur when your body has less estrogen. The dose of this medication is individualized for the person using the cream. The lowest dose that will treat the symptoms should be used.

This treatment should not be used to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia. Clinical evidence suggests that estrogen therapy may increase the risk of these serious conditions, as well as the risk of invasive breast cancer and blood clots in the legs or lungs. To minimize these risks, it should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.

This medication can harm an unborn baby or cause congenital disabilities and must not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or suspect you are pregnant while using this cream, notify your healthcare provider immediately.

Additionally, conjugated estrogens may reduce breast milk production and can be excreted into breast milk. Therefore, it is generally advised not to use this medication while breastfeeding.

Premarin Vaginal cream is not indicated for pediatric use and should not be administered to anyone under 18 years of age without specific medical advice and supervision.

There are several important drug interactions to consider, as conjugated estrogens can alter how your body responds to other treatments. This medication may interact with antidiabetic medications and blood-pressure-lowering drugs, potentially requiring dosage adjustments for those conditions. Interactions may also occur with certain antibiotics and antifungals, such as clarithromycin, itraconazole, and ketoconazole, as well as with other medications, including cyclosporine, dexamethasone, morphine, topiramate, and warfarin.

To ensure patient safety, always provide your doctor and pharmacist with a comprehensive list of all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal supplements you are taking.
