Percorten-V (Desoxycortone Pivalate) is a prescription medication used to treat primary hypoadrenocorticism, more commonly known as Addison's disease, in dogs. Addison's disease is a life-threatening condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones like aldosterone and sometimes glucocorticoids like cortisol. These hormones are essential for regulating sodium and potassium levels, as well as maintaining fluid balance, blood volume, and blood pressure. The active ingredient in Percorten-V is Desoxycortone Pivalate. Desoxycortone Pivalate belongs to a class of medications known as mineralocorticoid hormones. It works by increasing the reabsorption of sodium and water from the urine back into the body, while also promoting the excretion of potassium. This action helps correct the electrolyte imbalances and fluid deficits characteristic of Addison's disease.

You should not administer Percorten-V to your dog if it is allergic to Desoxycortone Pivalate or any of the ingredients in Percorten-V. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, especially if it:

• Is pregnant or breeding
Tell your veterinarian about all your dog's medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Percorten-V and other medicines, such as furosemide, digoxin, insulin, and prednisone. Inform your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or is in the process of breeding. The safety and effectiveness of Percorten-V in pregnant or breeding dogs have not been established. Inform your doctor if your dog is lactating. The use of this medicine is not generally recommended in lactating dogs unless the benefits outweigh the potential risks.
Use this medicine exactly as your veterinarian prescribes it. Percorten-V is an injectable suspension. It is administered by a veterinarian or a trained owner as an intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SQ) injection, typically once every 25 days. Do not administer this medicine intravenously, as this leads to shock. The frequency and dose of Percorten-V are based on the dog's response and regular monitoring of electrolytes. Shake the vial vigorously before each use. It is critical to use a new, sterile needle and syringe for each injection and to dispose of them properly in a sharps container. This medicine is not for use in humans. Do not miss a dose, as this can lead to a life-threatening Addisonian crisis. If a dose is missed, contact your veterinarian immediately for guidance. Addison's disease is a lifelong condition, and do not stop treatment suddenly without veterinary supervision. Store this drug safely. Keep out of the reach of children and other pets.
