Optimmune (Cyclosporin) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic dry eye (also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or KCS) and certain inflammatory eye conditions, such as chronic superficial keratitis (pannus), in dogs. KCS occurs when a dog's tear glands fail to produce sufficient natural tears, leading to dryness, irritation, inflammation, and potential corneal damage. It is commonly used in dogs, and occasionally prescribed off-label for cats and horses with similar conditions. The active ingredient in Optimmune is Cyclosporin. Cyclosporin belongs to a class of medications known as immunosuppressants. It works by increasing tear production and reducing inflammation, protecting the eye from long-term damage.
