Nidagel (Metronidazole) is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial vaginosis in women of reproductive age. Bacterial vaginosis is formally known as non-specific vaginitis, Gardnerella vaginalis, or Haemophilus vaginitis. It is an inflammatory condition of the vaginal that presents with itching, foul smell, and abnormal vaginal discharge due to an imbalance between the beneficial and harmful bacteria in the vaginal. Nidagel effectively treats intestinal and abdominal infections caused by bacteria and parasites. The active ingredient in Nidagel is Metronidazole. Metronidazole belongs to the class of medication called antibiotics. It works by killing and preventing the growth of bacteria causing the infection. Nidagel should be used vaginally, and it would be best to know that it does not cure vaginal infections caused by fungi and viruses.

Get medical help immediately if you have any signs of an allergic reaction while using Nidagel. The most common side effects of Nidagel may include:
• Abnormal vaginal discharge;
• Abdominal pain;
• Headache;
• Irritation of the vulva

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects, including:
• Disulfiram-like reaction when used with alcohol;
• High-grade fever that wasn’t present;
• Numbness and nerve paralysis;
• Severe abdominal discomfort;
• Severe vaginal itching;
• Whitish vaginal discharge;
• Worsening of symptoms

You should not use Nidagel if you are allergic to Metronidazole or have experienced an allergic reaction after using other Nitroimidazole cream. Nidagel topical medication should be used vaginally. Do not swallow or use it in different parts of the body. You should follow your doctor’s direction on how and when to use it. It should be used at bedtime. To prevent staining your underwear, you should wear a pad or napkin. Do not engage in sexual activities while using Nidagel topical gel. You should not use other vaginal medications or inserts while using Nidagel. It is essential to continue using the gel until you completed your dose, even if you feel better. Stopping the gel may worsen your symptoms or cause the infection to return. Inform your doctor if there is no improvement in your symptoms.

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Have blood disorder;
• Have neurological disorder;
• Have kidney problems;
• Have underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism);

Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. It is essential to treat vaginal infections in pregnancy to prevent harm to the child. However, do not use Metronidazole gel during the first trimester of your pregnancy without your doctor’s approval. It would be best to discuss with your doctor if Nidagel is best for you. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Nidagel and other medications such as progesterone intravaginal gel, disulfiram, and warfarin. Keep the gel in a safe place and away from children.
