Narcan (Naloxone)

Narcan (Naloxone) is a prescription medication that is used for the complete or partial reversal of opioid overdose with signs of breathing problems and severe sleepiness or not being able to respond. Naloxone belongs to the class of drugs known as opioid antagonists. This medication works by binding to the opioid receptors and by reversing and blocking the effects of other opioids. Narcan Nasal Spray should be given right away but it does not replace emergency medical care. The recommended initial dose of Narcan Nasal Spray in adults and pediatric patients is one spray delivered by intranasal administration, which delivers 4 mg of Naloxone Hydrochloride.

The common side effects of Narcan Nasal Spray and narcotic drug withdrawal may include body aches, chills, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, fever, flushing, goosebumps, nervousness, restlessness and shortness of breath.

Get emergency medical help right away after giving the first dose of Narcan Nasal Spray.

The serious side effects including sudden opioid withdrawal symptoms may include:

• Abnormal brain function;
• Agitation;
• Cardiac arrhythmias;
• Coma;
• Death;
• Pulmonary edema;
• Seizures;
• Shortness of breath

You should not use Narcan Nasal Spray if you are allergic to Naloxone Hydrochloride or any of the ingredients in Narcan Nasal Spray. Get emergency help right away after giving the first dose of Narcan Nasal Spray even if the person wakes up because they can relapse into respiratory depression. Naloxone should be used with caution in people with pre-existing cardiac disease or they are receiving potentially cardiotoxic drugs. Naloxone should only be used during pregnancy if it is clearly needed. It is unknown if Naloxone passes into breast-milk. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
