Myfortic (Mycophenolic Acid)
Myfortic (Mycophenolic Acid) is a prescription medication that is used in combination with other medications to keep your body from attacking and rejecting your transplanted kidney. Myfortic is usually given with cyclosporine and a steroid medication. Mycophenolic acid belongs to the class of medications called immunosuppressants. It works by weakening the body’s defense system to help your body accept the new kidney as if it were your own.
The brand Myfortic is available from Canada manufactured by Novartis. The generic Mycophenolic acid comes from Canada manufactured by a different manufacturer. Myfortic is available in the strength of 180 mg and 360 mg tablets.
Myfortic Side Effects
The common side effects may include anxiety, back pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, headache, insomnia, joint or muscle pain, nausea, upset stomach vomiting and weight gain.
Inform your doctor right away if you have any of the following serious side effects such as:
• Black stools;
• Chest pain;
• Easy bleeding or bruising;
• Fast or irregular heartbeat;
• Shortness of breath or rapid breathing;
• Swelling of the feet or ankles;
• Vomit that looks like coffee grounds

You should not take Myfortic if you have allergic to Mycophenolate Sodium or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you take including OTC and herbal medications. Mycophenolate can make you more likely to get infections or may worsen any current infections. Myfortic is not recommended for use during pregnancy as it may harm an unborn baby. It is important to prevent pregnancy while taking this medications and for six weeks after stopping the medication. Women of childbearing age must also use reliable forms of birth control during treatment and for at least six weeks after they stop the medication. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Do not breast feed while you are using this medication.
