Moviprep (Polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution) is a laxative solution that increases the amount of water in the intestinal tract to stimulate bowel movements. It is used to prepare the bowel before colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy. It contains sodium, potassium and other essential electrolytes. Moviprep belongs to the class of medication called laxatives (bowel preparation). It works by inducing osmotic effects and restoring lost electrolytes through stool. Taking Moviprep will empty the bowel so the intestinal lining can be appropriately examined during colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy procedures.

Get medical help immediately if you have any signs of an allergic reaction while taking Moviprep. The most common side effects of Moviprep may include:
• Abdominal pain;
• Anal irritation;
• Malaise;
• Nausea;
• Vomiting

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects including:
• Difficulty breathing;
• Hives;
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue and throat

If you are allergic to Moviprep, your doctor will use an alternative laxative for the procedure. It would be best to discuss your previous experience with Moviprep or similar laxatives with your doctor. Do not eat anything after breakfast the day before your colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy until after your hospital appointment. Take two litres of water containing Moviprep powder the night before your colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy procedure. You should follow your doctor’s direction on how to prepare laxatives. You must follow these instructions correctly. If you are not adequately prepared, the procedure may not be successful and may even result in the cancellation of the procedure. Do not use other medication with Moviprep, as this may complicate the procedure. Moviprep increases bowel movements, so stay near a toilet because you may need to use it urgently.

Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant;
• Have a blood disorder such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency;
• Have inflammatory bowel disease;
• Have intestinal obstruction and perforation;
• Have kidney problems;
• Have paralytic ileus;
• Have toxic megacolon

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, talk to your doctor before taking Moviprep. It is unknown if Moviprep laxative affects pregnant or nursing mothers. Your doctors will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk. Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Moviprep and other medications such as antidiabetic and warfarin.
