Mounjaro (Tirzepatide Injection) is a prescription medication used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus, in combination with diet and exercise. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a long-term condition where the body has trouble using insulin properly (insulin resistance) or doesn't make enough insulin. This causes high blood sugar levels. If not managed, it can lead to serious health problems like heart disease, kidney damage, nerve issues, and vision loss. Tirzepatide is also used for weight management in people who are overweight or obese and have at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, or heart disease. The active ingredient in Mounjaro is Tirzepatide. Tirzepatide belongs to a class of medications known as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It acts on both the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which are involved in regulating blood sugar and appetite. It increases insulin secretion only when blood sugar is high and slows gastric emptying. This reduces food intake and promotes satiety, leading to improved blood sugar control and significant weight loss.
