Mometamax (Gentamicin/Mometasone Furoate/Clotrimazole) is a prescription medication used to treat otitis externa (an inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal) in dogs. A combination of bacteria and yeast often causes otitis externa. Mometamax has a triple-action formula that addresses the infection and the associated inflammation, such as itching, redness, swelling, and pain. The active ingredients in Mometamax are Gentamicin, Mometasone Furoate, and Clotrimazole. Gentamicin belongs to a class of drugs called aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, effectively killing them and treating bacterial infections. Mometasone Furoate belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids. It works by reducing the swelling, redness, and itching in the ear canal caused by the infection. Clotrimazole belongs to a class of medications known as broad-spectrum antifungal agents. It works by inhibiting the growth of yeast.

You should not administer Mometamax if your dog is allergic to any of the ingredients in Mometamax, including Gentamicin, Mometasone Furoate, or Clotrimazole. Before you start administering this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog's medical history, especially if it:
• Has a history of hearing loss;
• Has a perforated eardrum;
• Has kidney dysfunction;
• Has systemic infections;
• Is lactating;
• Is pregnant or breeding
Tell your veterinarian about all your dog's medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Mometamax is a topical ear medication and is not expected to interact with other drugs. Inform your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant or is in the process of breeding. Mometamax should not be used in pregnant dogs. Using corticosteroids in pregnant or breeding dogs can cause congenital disabilities. Inform your doctor if your dog is lactating. It is unknown if the active ingredients in Mometamax pass into breastmilk. The use of this medication in lactating dogs is not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Use this medicine exactly as your veterinarian prescribes it. Mometamax is an otic suspension (ear drops). Clean and dry your dog's ear canal before administering the drug. Shake the bottle well. Your veterinarian will provide specific dosing instructions. After administering the medicine, gently massage the base of the ear to help the medication move into the ear canal. Do not use Mometamax for longer than your veterinarian prescribes. This medicine is for use in dogs only. Please do not use it on cats or other animals. A veterinarian must examine your dog's ear canal to ensure the eardrum is intact before treatment. Continue administering the medication even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared. When handling the medication, it's advisable to wear gloves to avoid contact. Store this drug at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children and other pets.
