Minims Tropicamide (Tropicamide) is a prescription medication used to dilate the pupil (mydriasis) and temporarily paralyze the eye's focusing muscles (cycloplegia). It is commonly used before eye examinations, retinal imaging, or surgical procedures to allow the doctor to view the inside of the eye clearly. It may also be used to reduce inflammation or prevent complications in certain eye conditions where pupil dilation is beneficial. The active ingredient in Minims Tropicamide is Tropicamide. Tropicamide belongs to a class of medications known as antimuscarinic/anticholinergic ophthalmic agents. It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors in the eye's iris sphincter and ciliary body. This temporarily relaxes the muscles that constrict the pupil and control lens accommodation, resulting in pupil dilation (mydriasis) and loss of focusing ability (cycloplegia) for a short duration, typically 4 to 8 hours.
