This is a synthetic prostamide, a structural analog of prostaglandin with potent ocular hypotensive activity. It is available as an eye drop that reduces intraocular pressure by increasing fluid drainage from the eye. This medication is used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in normal, ocular hypertensive, and glaucomatous eyes.

The information below lists potential side effects and risks. It is crucial to discuss these with your doctor or pharmacist.

Common Side Effects – The following are common side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome.
• Allergic conjunctivitis
• Asthenia (weakness or lack of energy)
• Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation)
• Conjunctival hyperemia (redness of the eye)
• Eyelash changes (increased length, thickness, and number)
• Eye irritation, pain, or pruritus (itching)
• Foreign body sensation
• Headache
• Increased iris pigmentation (permanent darkening of the colored part of the eye)
• Periocular skin hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin around the eye)
• Punctate keratitis (small lesions on the eye surface)
• Visual disturbances or blurred vision

Other Potential Side Effects: (less common) – These effects are reported less frequently but can still occur:
• Asthenopia (eye strain)
• Blepharospasm (eyelid twitching)
• Conjunctival edema or hemorrhage
• Depression
• Dizziness
• Dry eyes
• Eyelid margin crusting
• Eyelid retraction
• Hirsutism (abnormal hair growth outside the treatment area)

Serious Side Effects - These are rare but potentially severe. Seek your doctor or call medical emergency services immediately if any of the following occur:

Lumigan contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause discoloration. It should not be administered while wearing soft contact lenses. Remove lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them to prevent discoloration.

Be aware that bimatoprost can cause a gradual, permanent increase in the brown pigment of the iris, which may not be noticeable for several months or years. While this change is primarily cosmetic, it typically affects only the treated eye, which could result in a permanent color difference between your eyes. Additionally, bimatoprost may cause reversible changes to the eyelashes, including increased length, thickness, and number of hairs.

To prevent infection and serious eye damage, it is critical to avoid touching the dispenser tip to any surface, including the eye or surrounding skin, as contamination can cause bacterial keratitis. Users should also be aware that skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) may occur in areas where the solution frequently contacts the eyelid; however, this is usually reversible upon discontinuation.

This medication should not be used if you have a known hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any other ingredients in the formulation. Consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is not known if Lumigan will harm an unborn baby or if it passes into breast milk; however, its use should only be considered if the potential benefit justifies the risk.

Furthermore, although specific drug interaction studies have not been conducted for Lumigan ophthalmic solution, the simultaneous use of multiple prostaglandin analogs (such as latanoprost or travoprost) is not recommended. Combining these medications may reduce the intraocular pressure-lowering effect or cause unexpected changes in intraocular pressure.

If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications to ensure proper absorption and prevent the second drop from washing out the first. Always inform your physician or pharmacist about any other prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, or herbal supplements you are taking to ensure there are no contraindications with your treatment plan.
