Lumigan contains the preservative benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause discoloration. It should not be administered while wearing soft contact lenses. Be aware that bimatoprost can cause a gradual, permanent increase in the brown pigment of the iris, which may not be noticeable for several months or years. While this change is primarily cosmetic, it typically affects only the treated eye, which could result in a permanent color difference between your eyes. Additionally, bimatoprost may cause reversible changes to the eyelashes, including increased length, thickness, and number of hairs.
To prevent infection and serious eye damage, it is critical to avoid touching the dispenser tip to any surface, including the eye or surrounding skin, as contamination can cause bacterial keratitis. Users should also be aware that skin darkening (hyperpigmentation) may occur in areas where the solution frequently contacts the eyelid; however, this is usually reversible upon discontinuation.
This medication should not be used if you have a known hypersensitivity to bimatoprost or any other ingredients in the formulation.
