Lokelma (Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate) is used to treat high levels of potassium in the blood (hyperkalemia) in adults. Lokelma belongs to a group of drugs called potassium binders. This medication works by increasing potassium excretion through binding of potassium in the gastrointestinal tract which in turn lowers blood potassium levels. The symptoms of high levels of potassium are nausea, muscle weakness or tiredness, irregular heartbeats and paralysis. The recommended dose for initial treatment of hyperkalemia is 10 gm administered three times a day for up to 48 hours.
