Lidodan (Lidocaine Hydrochloride) is a non-sterile topical anesthetic for temporary relief of pain. Lidodan Viscous Solution is used to relieve pain and discomfort from a sore throat/mouth. It is also used to numb the lining of the mouth and throat before certain medical/dental procedures (such as dental impressions). This numbing helps prevent the urge to close the throat (gag reflex), which might make the procedure more difficult. Lidodan may also be used to relieve pain and discomfort from irritation of the esophagus (esophagitis). Lidodan Topical Solution and Lidodan Ointment is used for itching caused by hemorrhoids, pain during certain medical procedures, scrapes, minor burns, eczema, insect bites, or itching. Lidodan works by causing temporary numbness/loss of feeling in the skin and mucous membranes.
Lidodan is manufactured by Odan in Canada and is available OTC (without a prescription). Lidodan Viscous Solution is available in dosages of 2 %/50 ml and 2 %/100 ml. Lidodan Topical Solution is available in the dosage of 4 %/50 ml. Lidodan Ointment is available in dosages of 5 %/15 gm and 5 %/35 gm. The generic alternative, Lidocaine Hydrochloride, is currently not available.
