Lasix (Furosemide) is a water pill that is used to treat fluid retention by eliminating water and salt from the body in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. This medication may also be used to treat high blood pressure. Furosemide works by eliminating water and salt from the body by increasing the amount of urine produced and excreted.
We currently have the brand from India and Canada manufactured by Sanofi Aventis. The generic comes for Canada and New Zealand. This medication is available in the strength of 20mg, 40mg and 80mg tablets and 10mg/ml/120ml oral solution.
Common side effects include:
• Abdominal pain;
• Sensitivity to light
Serious side effects include:
• Difficult to concentrate;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Ringing in the ears;
• Symptoms of high blood sugar;
• Unusual infections
You should not use Lasix if you are unable to urinate. Before you start using this medication, inform your doctor about your medical condition and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. You should also inform your doctor if you have an MRI recently or any type of scan using a radioactive dye that is injected into your veins. It is unknown whether Lasix will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Furosemide can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. This medication may also slow breast milk production. Do not use Lasix without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. There may be an interaction between Lasix and other medications such as cyclosporine, digoxin, methotrexate, vardenafil, ibuprofen, risperidone, etc.
