Lactulose is a synthetic sugar used to treat constipation. It may help to increase the number of bowel movements per day and the number of days you have a bowel movement. Lactulose may sometimes be used to treat or prevent certain conditions of the brain that is caused by liver failure. These conditions can lead to confusion, problems with memory or thinking, behavior change, tremors, feeling irritable, sleep problems, loss of coordination, and loss of consciousness. Lactulose is a colonic acidifier that works by increasing the water content of the stool, hence softening the stool.

Lactulose may cause diarrhea, gas, bloating, burping, stomach pain or rumbling, cramps, dehydration, excessive bowel movement, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, abdominal distension, and nausea. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if these effects are severe or do not go away.
Check with your doctor right away if you experience serious side effects including:
• Diarrhea;
• Irregular heartbeat;
• Muscle cramps or weakness;
• Seizures;
• Vomiting
You should not use Lactulose if you are on a special diet low in galactose. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you need to have a colonoscopy or if you have ever had diabetes. Do not take any other laxative or antacid unless it is recommended by your doctor. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Lactulose and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
