Isentress (Raltegravir) is a prescription medication used as part of combination therapy to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and children. HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically CD4 (T) cells, weakening the body's ability to fight infections and diseases. If untreated, HIV can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Isentress helps control HIV infection by reducing the amount of virus in the blood, which supports immune function and lowers the risk of HIV-related complications. The active ingredient in Isentress is Raltegravir. Raltegravir belongs to a class of medications known as integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs). It works by blocking the HIV integrase enzyme, which the virus needs to insert its genetic material into human DNA. By preventing this step, Isentress stops HIV from multiplying in the body.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Isentress may be used during pregnancy when appropriate. Maintaining viral suppression is essential for both parent and baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended for people living with HIV due to the risk of viral transmission through breast milk, regardless of medication use.
Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes it. Isentress is taken by mouth and must be used in combination with other antiretroviral medications. Take the tablets at the same time each day to maintain consistent drug levels. Do not skip doses or stop taking Isentress without consulting your doctor, as this may lead to viral resistance. Swallow tablets whole. Continue treatment even if you feel well, as HIV therapy is long-term.
