Humalog mix 75/25 Prefilled Pen (Generic name: 75% insulin lispro protamine suspension and 25% insulin lispro injection (rDNA ORIGIN)) is an approved insulin analog used to treat type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes in adults. Like other insulin products, it works by helping sugar (glucose) get into cells. Insulin Lispro starts working faster and lasts for shorter duration of action than human regular insulin. Therefore, in patients with type 1 diabetes, Humalog insulin should be used in regimens that include a longer-acting insulin (NPH). However, in patients with type 2 diabetes, Humalog insulin may be used without a longer-acting insulin when used in combination therapy with sulfonylurea agents. Humalog insulin is only part of a complete program of diabetes treatment that may also include diet, exercise, weight control, dental care, and regular blood sugar tests. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Use Humalog mix 75/25 prefilled pen exactly as it was prescribed for you.
The most common side effects of Humalog insulin include itching, redness, swelling at the site of injection, low potassium levels in the blood (hypokalemia), and signs of low blood glucose (e.g., anxiety, blurred vision, dizziness, fast heartbeat, headache, nausea, numbness, sweating, tiredness, trembling, and weakness). If you experience any severe side effect such as rash, seizures, unconsciousness or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction (e.g., difficult breathing, itching, rash, swelling of face or throat), please inform your doctor immediately.
Do NOT use insulin lispro if you are allergic to insulin or any ingredients in Humalog medication. Before using insulin lispro, tell your doctor if you have had any medical history, especially of: low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). Tell your doctor about all the prescriptions or over-the-counter (OTC) medications you use. They may interact with Humalog drug, especially of: other insulin products, oral diabetes medicine, ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril, disopyramide), anti-psychotic drugs (e.g., chlorpromazine, clozapine), beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol, lithium), corticosteroids, estrogen, hormonal contraceptives (e.g., birth control pills), MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid), salicylates (e.g., aspirin), sulfa antibiotics, sympathomimetics (e.g., albuterol), thyroid medicine and water pills. Humalog injection should be given within 15 minutes before or immediately after a meal. Use Humalog insulins with caution in the elderly and children younger than 3 years old.
