Glycerin Suppositories (Glycerin) is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve constipation and improve bowel movements occasionally. Eating a high-fiber diet, drinking plenty of fluids, and exercising regularly can help maintain good bowel function. Adults should have bowel movements from once daily to 1 to 2 times weekly. The active ingredient in Normacol is Glycerin. Glycerin belongs to a class of medicines called hyperosmotic laxatives. It works by drawing water into the intestines, resulting in bowel movements within 15 to 60 minutes.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Glycerin suppositories. The most common side effects of Glycerin suppositories may include the following:
• Burning;
• Diarrhea;
• Flatulence;
• Rectal irritation;
• Stomach cramps;
• Upset stomach

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Bleeding from rectum or rectal pain;
• Breathing difficulties;
• Red, swollen, or peeling skin;
• Severe stomach ache;
• Swallowing difficulties

These are not all of the side effects of Glycerin suppositories. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.

You should not use Glycerin suppositories if you are allergic to Glycerin or any ingredient in Glycerin suppositories. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to be pregnant;
• Have bowel block;
• Have diabetes;
• Have had a change in bowel habits lasting longer than two weeks;
• Have rectal bleeding;
• Have stomach pain

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Glycerin suppositories and other medicines. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Glycerin Suppositories should be avoided in the first trimester. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. This drug does not pose a risk to a nursing infant. Use Glycerin suppositories precisely as prescribed by your doctor. Wash your hands before opening the individual packaging. Before unwrapping, you can chill the suppository in a refrigerator or under cold running water if it is too soft. Moisten the tip of the suppository with a little cold water to aid insertion. Lie on your left side if you are right-handed, and draw your knees up towards your chest. Insert the tip first. Use your index or middle finger to push the suppository into your rectum. Insert the suppository as far as possible. Lower your legs in a comfortable position to hold the suppository in place. Retain the suppository for at least 15 to 20 minutes if possible. If you feel the suppository must come out, it has not been inserted high enough. Wash your hands afterward. Glycerin Suppositories are for rectal administration. Do not swallow this drug. This drug is a short-term relief from constipation. Using this drug frequently can result in loss of normal bowel function and an inability to have a bowel movement without using the suppository. If you are still constipated after three days, you should see your doctor. Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and light.
