Galliprant Information
Galliprant (Grapiprant) is a prescription veterinary medication used to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. Canine osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition in which worn cartilage allows bones and nerve endings within the joint to rub painfully together, often causing stiffness, limping, and reluctance to climb stairs, jump, or rise from rest. The active ingredient in Galliprant is grapiprant. It belongs to a class of medications known as the piprant-class non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is the first EP4 prostaglandin receptor antagonist approved for veterinary use. Unlike traditional NSAIDs that broadly inhibit the COX enzyme pathway, Galliprant specifically blocks the EP4 receptor, the primary receptor responsible for transmitting OA pain and inflammation, which may reduce effects on the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and normal blood clotting.
Manufacturer Information
We currently offer the brand Galliprant, manufactured in Canada by Elanco, in 20 mg, 60 mg, and 100 mg tablets. The generic grapiprant is currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).
Contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog shows any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Galliprant. The most common side effects of Galliprant may include the following:
• Decreased appetite;
• Diarrhea or soft stool;
• Lethargy or tiredness;
• Vomiting;
Contact your veterinarian right away if your dog has any of the severe side effects, including:
• Gastrointestinal Effects: Watery or bloody stools, black or tarry stools, or persistent vomiting;
• Organ Function Changes: Signs of kidney or liver toxicity, such as decreased serum albumin and total protein, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or unusual lethargy;
These are not all of Galliprant's side effects. Always contact your veterinarian if you notice any unusual symptoms in your dog.
Do not give Galliprant to a dog that is hypersensitive to grapiprant or any of its ingredients, including its pork liver flavoring. Before starting this medication, tell your veterinarian about your dog's full medical history, especially if your dog:
• Has a history of cardiac disease;
• Has pre-existing gastrointestinal, kidney, or liver conditions;
• Is used for breeding, or is pregnant or lactating;
• Is younger than 9 months of age or weighs less than 8 lbs (3.6 kg);
Tell your veterinarian about all medications your dog is taking, including other prescription, OTC, and supplement products. Galliprant should not be given together with other NSAIDs (such as carprofen or meloxicam) or corticosteroids, as concurrent use may increase the risk of side effects. Concurrent use with other anti-inflammatory or protein-bound drugs has not been studied.
The safe use of Galliprant has not been evaluated in dogs used for breeding, or in pregnant or lactating dogs. Discuss alternative pain management options with your veterinarian if your dog falls into one of these categories.
