Efudex (Flurouracil) is a topical cream used for the treatment of skin cancer that is known as superficial basal cell carcinoma. It may also be used to treat actinic keratosis, which is a skin condition that may lead to skin cancer. Flurouracil belongs to a class of medications known as anti-metabolites. It works by blocking the growth of abnormal cells that cause the cancer or the skin condition.

We currently have the brand name Efudex cream from Canada manufactured by Valeant. The generic Fluorouracil cream also called Flonida comes from India and is manufactured by Shalaks Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd. It may come from other suppliers around the world.

The common side effects may include abnormal taste in the mouth, burning, changes in skin color at the site of application, dryness, eye irritation, irritability, redness, skin irritation, swelling, tenderness, trouble sleeping and temporary loss of hair. The serious side effects may include:
• Bloody diarrhea;
• Chills;
• Easy bruising/bleeding;
• Signs of infection;
• Stomach/abdominal pain;
• Vomiting

You should not use Efudex cream if you are allergic to Fluorouracil or if you have any other allergies. Before you start using this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Flurouracil should not be used during pregnancy. It may harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you get pregnant or think you may be pregnant. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Do not breast-feed while using this medication.
