Effient (Prasugrel) is used to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other circulation problems in people who have had an angioplasty. Prasugrel belongs to the class of medications called platelet aggregation inhibitors or antiplatelets. This medication keeps the platelets from sticking together to prevent unwanted blood clots that can block an artery or a stent.
The brand Effient (also known as Efient) comes from UK and is manufactured by Eli Lilly. The generic Prax comes from India and is manufactured by Torrent. It may come from other suppliers around the world. This medication is available in the strength of 5mg and 10mg tablets.
Serious side effects may include:
• Bleeding that will not stop, nosebleeds, bleeding gums;
• Blood in your urine or stools;
• Coughing blood;
• Headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
• Pain in the chest, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating;
Less serious side effects may include:
• Mild headache or dizziness;
• Minor chest pain, back pain;
• Tired feeling
Do not use Effient if you are allergic to Prasugrel, or if you have any active bleeding such as a stomach ulcer or bleeding in the brain. Take this medication exactly as it is prescribed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water. Do not crush or break an Effient tablet, swallow the pill whole. Before you start taking Effient, inform your doctor if you are taking a blood thinner such as warfarin (Coumadin). This medication is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby. It is unknown whether Prasugrel passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
