Cortate (Hydrocortisone) is a prescription medication used for the temporary relief of minor skin irritations and inflammation, such as itching and rashes. Eczema, dermatitis, poison ivy, insect bites, poison oak, soaps, detergents, cosmetics, and jewelry can cause minor skin irritation. The active ingredient in Cortate is Hydrocortisone. We currently offer the brand Cortate from Canada manufactured by Wellspring in the strength of 0.5 %/15 gm cream. The generic Hydrocortisone is currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).
Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Cortate. The most common side effects of Cortate may include the following:
• Burning, dryness, or irritation at the application site;
• Increased redness or scaling of skin
Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Excess hair growth;
• Increased skin sensitivity;
• Persistent irritation;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Skin thinning or softening
These are not all of Cortate's side effects. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
You should not use Cortate if you are allergic to Hydrocortisone or any of the ingredients in Cortate. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant;
• Have active and untreated bacterial or fungal skin infections;
• Have an allergy to corticosteroids;
• Have untreated tuberculosis;
• Have viral infections such as herpes simplex, vaccinia, or chickenpox
Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between the Cortate and other medicines, such as aldesleukin and calcipotriol. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Topical hydrocortisone is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medication in pregnancy with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Hydrocortisone is not expected to harm a nursing infant.
Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Cortate comes as a cream. This medicine is for topical use only. Please do not take it by mouth. Always wash your hands before and after using Cortate. Apply the medication to the affected area as a thin film, 2 to 3 times a day, or as directed by your doctor. Avoid contact with your eyes. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage or non-breathable wrapping unless your doctor tells you to do so. Do not use Cortate for more than 7 days without informing your doctor. If your symptoms persist for longer than 7 days, inform your doctor. Long-term use of corticosteroids can lead to thinning of the skin and other side effects. Do not apply Cortate on an area with infection. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
