Cogentin (Benztropine) is combined with other medications to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as muscle spasms, stiffness, tremors, and poor muscle control. Cogentin is also used to treat these same symptoms when they are caused by other drugs such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine, perphenazine, and others. Cogentin works by reducing the effects of several chemicals in the body that may be unbalanced as a result of a disease (such as Parkinson’s disease), or from certain drug therapies. By targeting and reducing chemicals, such as acetylcholine, Cogentin can effectively reduce the symptoms caused by an imbalance of chemicals. Cogentin is not a cure for Parkinson’s disease, but can reduce symptoms and improve your overall quality of life
