Diltiazem is a prescription medication that is used to treat high blood pressure and to control chest pain. Diltiazem belongs to the class of medications called calcium-channel blockers. This medication works by relaxing the blood vessels in the body and heart so the heart does not have to pump as hard which lowers the heart rate. It also helps the blood flow more easily. Diltiazem is taken before meals and at bedtime usually three to four times a day.
