Ampyra (Dalfampridine) is a prescription medication used to improve walking in adults with multiple sclerosis (MS). Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain and between the brain and body. The most common symptoms include fatigue, numbness, difficulty walking, and spasticity. Ampyra addresses walking impairment, a symptom of MS. The active ingredient in Ampyra is Dalfampridine. Dalfampridine belongs to a class of medications known as potassium channel blockers. It works by blocking potassium channels, thereby strengthening nerve signals and improving the function of damaged nerves, which can lead to enhanced walking ability.

We currently offer the brand Ampyra, manufactured by Biogen, in Canada and New Zealand, in the strength of 10 mg extended-release tablets. The generic Dalfampridine is currently unavailable (at this pharmacy).
Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Ampyra. The most common side effects of Ampyra may include the following:
• Urinary tract infection (UTI);
• Insomnia;
• Dizziness;
• Headache;
• Nausea;
• Weakness
Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat;
• Seizures;
• Kidney problems
These are not all of Ampyra's side effects. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
You should not use Ampyra if you are allergic to Dalfampridine or any ingredient in Ampyra. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant;
• Have a history of seizures;
• Have moderate to severe kidney disease
Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between Ampyra and other medicines, such as cimetidine and metformin. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. The safety and effectiveness of Ampyra in pregnancy have not been established. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine when pregnant with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. It is unknown if Dalfampridine is excreted in breast milk or if it may harm a nursing infant. This medicine should be used when breastfeeding only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes it. Ampyra is a tablet. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. A broken tablet can release too much of the drug at one time, increasing your risk of side effects, especially seizures. Take Ampyra twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. Do not take more than two tablets in a 24-hour period. Store this drug at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep out of the reach of children.
