Alupent (Orciprenaline - Metaproterenol) is a prescription medication used to treat wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing caused by asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Asthma is an inflammatory lung disease causing temporary airway narrowing, often triggered by allergens or exercise. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, causing permanent airway damage and obstruction, typically due to long-term exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke. While they share symptoms, asthma symptoms are often reversible, whereas COPD is progressive and irreversible. The active ingredient in Alupent is Orciprenaline - Metaproterenol. Orciprenaline - Metaproterenol belongs to a class of medications known as selective Beta-2 Adrenergic Agonists. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding the bronchi (air passages) in the lungs, which widens the airways and improves airflow, making breathing easier.
