Zirgan (Ganciclovir) eye gel is used to treat herpes infection of the eye in adults and children over the age of two years old. Ganciclovir medication belongs to a class of drugs known as antivirals. It works by blocking receptors so viruses can’t enter healthy cells, which stops the growth of the virus. Treating a herpes outbreak may help the sores in the eye to heal faster, and also lower the risk of complications such as decreased vision or blindness. Zirgan is not a cure for herpes infection. This virus continues to live in the body even between outbreaks of infection.

We currently offer the brand Zirgan eye gel from the United Kingdom also called Virgan in the strength of 0.15 %/5 gm. The generic version is not available.

The common side effects of Zirgan may include temporary blurred vision, mild eye irritation/redness and sensitivity to light.
Contact your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects occur:
• Eye pain, burning, redness, or watering;
• Feeling like something is in your eye;
• Watery eyes, more sensitive to light

You should not use Zirgan if you are allergic to Ganciclovir or Acyclovir. Prior to taking this medication, tell your doctor about medical history and if you have an infection in any other part of your body or if you have low platelet levels in your blood. This drug may cause temporary blurred vision after application. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity that requires clear vision until you are sure you can perform such activities safely. Do not touch your eyes and wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of infection. Avoid wearing contact lenses while you are using Zirgan. Do not wear contact lenses at any time if you have an active eye ulcer or infection. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Zirgan and other medications. Ganciclovir can decrease sperm count and may affect a man's fertility. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication should not be used by a child younger than two years old.
