Zelboraf (Vemurafenib) is a prescription medication used to treat adults with unresectable or metastatic melanoma (a type of skin cancer) that has a specific genetic mutation, known as BRAF V600. Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that begins in the cells (melanocytes) that produce the skin pigment melanin. Unresectable melanoma cannot be entirely removed by surgery, while metastatic melanoma has spread to other parts of the body. Approximately half of all melanomas have a BRAF gene mutation, which drives the uncontrolled cell growth. The active ingredient in Zelboraf is Vemurafenib. Vemurafenib belongs to a class of medications known as BRAF inhibitors. It works by targeting and blocking the activity of the mutated BRAF protein. By inhibiting this abnormal protein, Zelboraf helps to slow down the growth and spread of the cancer.
