Triphasil (Levonorgestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol) is a prescription medication used to prevent ovulation. The contraceptive also makes periods more regular, decreases blood loss and painful periods, and decreases the risk of ovarian cysts. Triphasil also causes changes to the cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. This drug is a combination hormone medication for preventing pregnancy. The active ingredients in Triphasil are Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl estradiol. Levonorgestrel belongs to a class of drugs called progestins. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary or by preventing the fertilization of the egg by sperm. Ethinyl estradiol belongs to a class of drugs called synthetic estrogens. It works by stopping a woman’s egg from fully developing each month to prevent fertilization. Triphasil is only a birth control method. It does not protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV, gonorrhea, or chlamydia.
