Tiazac XC (Diltiazem Hydrochloride Extended Release) is used to treat mild to moderate high blood pressure and chest pain. Diltiazem belongs to the class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump very hard which lowers the blood pressure and heart rate. It also increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart. You may be able to help prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems by lowering high blood pressure. Tiazac XC is taken by mouth with or without food usually once daily.

The common side effects of Tiazac XC may include constipation, dizziness, flushing, headache, lightheadedness, nausea and weakness.
Talk to your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Dark urine;
• Mental or mood changes;
• New or worsening symptoms of heart failure;
• Persistent nausea or vomiting;
• Severe stomach or abdominal pain;
• Slow irregular pounding or fast heartbeat;
• Swelling ankles or feet;
• Unusual dreams;
• Unusual or sudden weight gain;
• Yellowing eyes or skin

Alcohol and marijuana can make you dizzier. You should not drive, use machinery or do any activity that requires you to be alert until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects like dizziness, constipation or swelling ankles or feet. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. Diltiazem passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
