Mucinex (Guaifenesin) is an over-the-counter medication used to reduce chest congestion caused by common colds, allergies, bronchitis, and other breathing illnesses, making coughing out through your mouth easier. Chest congestion results in thick and dense mucus buildup in the lungs which can be difficult to get out through coughing. The active ingredient in Mucinex is Guaifenesin. Guaifenesin belongs to a class of drugs called expectorants. It works by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, clearing congestion, and making breathing easier. Mucinex will not work for ongoing chest congestion from smoking or long-term breathing problems.
