Ferofit (Ferrous Fumarate – 100mg of elemental iron) is an over-the-counter medication used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia occurs when the body does not have enough iron to produce sufficient hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen. People with low iron intake, poor iron absorption, iron loss due to blood loss, and increased iron needs (for instance, during pregnancy). The active ingredient in Ferofit is Ferrous Fumarate. Ferrous Fumarate belongs to a class of drugs called iron supplements. It works by replenishing the body’s iron stores, helping the body produce hemoglobin.

We currently offer the brand Ferofit from Canada manufactured by Pharmaris Canada Inc. in the strength of 300 mg tablets. The generic Ferrous Fumarate is not available.
Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs or an allergic reaction while using Ferofit. The most common side effects of Ferofit may include the following:
• Appetite loss;
• Constipation;
• Dark-coloured stools;
• Diarrhea;
• Heartburn;
• Nausea;
• Stomach upset
Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the severe side effects, including:
• Black, tarry, or red stools;
• Blood in or on stools;
• Severe nausea;
• Severe stomach cramps;
• Signs of an allergic reaction, such as trouble breathing, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or throat
These are not all of Ferofit's side effects. Always contact your doctor if you notice any unusual symptoms.
You should not use Ferofit if you are allergic to Ferrous Fumarate or any ingredient in Ferofit. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history, especially if you:
• Are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed;
• Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant;
• Have diverticular disease;
• Have had major stomach surgery;
• Have had repeated blood transfusions;
• Have hemolytic anemia;
• Have inflammatory bowel conditions, like ulcerative colitis;
• Have iron overload disorders, like hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis;
• Have pernicious anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12;
• Have stomach or duodenal ulcer
Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be drug interactions between the Ferofit and other medicines, such as doxycycline, levofloxacin, alendronate, levodopa, methyldopa, levothyroxine, colestyramine, etc. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Pregnant women have increased iron needs. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine in pregnancy with your doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Although Ferrous Fumarate passes into breast milk, it is considered safe in nursing infants. Discuss the benefits and risks of using this medicine when breastfeeding with your doctor.
Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Ferofit comes in many forms, including tablets. Swallow this medicine whole with a glass of water or juice. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. You may take this drug with or without food. Ferofit works best when taken on an empty stomach. However, if you experience stomach upset, you can take the medicine with food or just after food. Do not take Ferofit with milk, dairy products, tea, or coffee. It is generally recommended to separate their intake by at least 1-2 hours before or after taking Ferofit, as they can interfere with iron absorption. Do not take this medicine for longer than your doctor advises, which is often for several months to treat anemia and then for 3-6 months after your condition has improved to build up your body's iron supply. Store this drug at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
