DermaBase is an over-the-counter medication used to treat or prevent dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin. It is also used to treat minor skin irritations like diaper rash and skin burns from radiation therapy. Harsh soaps, the environment, too much bathing, aging, and skin conditions can cause dry, rough, itchy, or scaly skin. DermaBase is hypoallergenic and contains no active ingredient. DermaBase belongs to a class of drugs called topical emollients. It works by forming an oily layer on the top of the skin to trap water in the skin and reduce irritation. The emollient is less likely to cause allergic reactions.
