Colestid (Colestipol) is a prescription medication used to treat high cholesterol. Colestid belongs to a class of medications called Bile Acid Sequestrants, and lowers “bad” cholesterol in your blood, also called LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol. It does this by binding with bile acids in the intestines, which forms a complex that can then be removed through excretion. This increased output of bile acids leads to an increase of receptors in your liver that can reduce LDL cholesterol levels, which in turn lowers the overall level of the bad cholesterol. Lowering your LDL cholesterol may reduce your risk of heart disease and arteriosclerosis (hardened arteries), which can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and circulation problems.

Avoid taking other medications at the same time you take Colestid. Take your other medications at least 1 hour before or 4 hours after you take this medication. Some medications may interact with Colestid, especially steroids, heart medications, diuretics (water pills), antibiotics, or other cholesterol medications. This medication can cause constipation. Avoid this by drinking 8 to 12 full glasses of water every day. Ask your doctor before using a laxative or stool softener.

Colestid is not expected to harm an unborn baby when taken at the recommended dose. However, taking Colestid can make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins that are needed during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Colestid can also make it harder for your body to absorb certain vitamins that are important if you are nursing a baby. Do not take Colestid without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Some forms of this medication may contain Phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this medication if you have phenylketonuria. Colestid is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
