Allegra (Fexofenadine) is an over-the-counter medication used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is an inflammation of the nasal membranes that occurs when the immune system overreacts to environmental allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, or mold. It causes symptoms such as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, itching in the nose, eyes, or throat, and watery eyes. Chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU) is a form of chronic hives characterized by red, itchy welts on the skin that appear at least twice a week for over six weeks, with no known cause. The active ingredient in Allegra is Fexofenadine. Fexofenadine belongs to a class of medications known as antihistamines. It works by selectively blocking the effects of histamine at the H1 receptor, a substance released by the body during an allergic reaction that is responsible for causing allergy symptoms.
