Acuvail (Ketorolac Tromethamine Ophthalmic Solution 0.45%) is a prescription medication used to treat pain and inflammation following cataract eye surgery. Cataract surgery is a common procedure to remove a clouded lens from the eye. Following this surgery, patients often experience pain and inflammation (swelling and redness) as part of the normal healing process. The active ingredient in Acuvail is Ketorolac Tromethamine. Ketorolac Tromethamine belongs to a class of medications known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, which are substances in the body that cause inflammation and pain. By reducing prostaglandin levels, Acuvail helps to alleviate the pain and inflammation associated with cataract surgery.

Use this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes it. Acuvail is an ophthalmic solution. Wash your hands before and after using Acuvail. Tilt your head back or lie down. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Do not touch your eye, eyelid, or any other surface with the tip of the single-dose vial to avoid contamination. Instill one drop into the affected eye and close your eye gently. Press on the inner corner of your eye near the nose for about 1 minute to help the medication stay in the eye and reduce systemic absorption. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between medications. Typically, one drop is applied to the affected eye twice daily, starting 1 day before cataract surgery and continuing through the first 2 weeks of the postoperative period. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions. Do not use for more than two weeks unless advised by your doctor, as there is a risk of corneal problems with prolonged NSAID ophthalmic use. Acuvail may cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until your vision clears. Do not use Acuvail with contact lenses in your eyes. Remove them before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. Store this drug at room temperature. Keep out of the reach of children.
