Skinny Jeans and Other Fashion Hazards to Your Health

The world is in no shortage of fashion trends, but how many of you knew there are perils of looking beautiful in the eyes of society? As a matter of fact, some of the most beloved trends are some of the most dangerous. Don’t believe me? Keep reading.

Not All Jeans are Made Equal

While I’ve never jumped on the bandwagon to wear my jeans like they’re tights (boot cut happens to be my style of choice), the skinny jeans trend has certainly been around longer than I can remember. In fact, I vaguely remember when they started making their comeback and thinking there was no way they’d go with half of my wardrobe and shoes. I suppose that was the point.

Luckily for people like me, as it turns out, skinny jeans can kill you. Okay, maybe not kill you – but they certainly aren’t good for you. The reasons to avoid skinny jeans have been surmounting since the 1970’s, but most recently brought to the media’s attention because of a 35-year-old woman in Australia.

Turns out, her over-tight skinny jeans exacerbated a condition known as compartment syndrome. This happens to be a painful (potentially serious) condition caused by bleeding or swelling within a bundle of muscles - in her case, the calves.

For men, the trendy denims can cause their own horrendous side effects like twisted testicles, bladder weakness, and even urinary tract infections. Let’s not even talk about the issues of zipping those puppies up for men! With all the scary things that can go wrong, it’s a wonder people are still trying to squeeze their bodies into them.

Flip-Flops: Friend or Foe?

It’s summertime and you know what that means… shorts, tanks, and the ever-popular flip-flop. Here’s another one I never quite got the hankering to try, but mostly because I can’t stand the feeling of something between my toes. Turns out, once again, my intuition (or neuroticism, as it were) may be my saving grace.

As it turns out, there are plenty of reasons not to wear flip-flops, the least of which being the gross-out factor when you take into account the bacteria growing on those bad boys. In fact, the bacteria growing on those fashionable pieces of plastic can actually be the source of fungal infections and other nasties. The University of Miami set up a mobile lab not long ago to test what was lurking on people’s flip-flops and the results were… let’s just say, pretty nasty. They found most of them were covered with bacteria from fecal matter, skin, and respiratory germs, microbes that can cause yeast infections and diaper rash, and even the germ Staphylococcus aureus.

In case all those details weren’t enough to change your mind, how about this: flip-flops can seriously hurt your feet (we’re talking bunions, hammertoe, tendonitis, collapsed arch – just to name a few), they alter the way you walk as you widen your gate and turn your feet inwards to keep the dang things from falling off, they mess with your posture because there is no support and your spine has to compensate (no good for back pain sufferers to start with), and they increase your chances to trip, fall, and otherwise have something smash up your toes.

In all honesty, you’re better off running with your bare feet than using flip-flops, but I’ll let you be the judge.

Loosen Your Tie

While wearing a suit and tie may have the ability to make women swoon (just ask anyone who’s read the Fifty Shades series), having a tie around your neck can be a dangerous accessory. This is one I honestly have never had to worry about – go figure right? However, it’s a good one for women to note so we can pass on the details to husbands, boyfriends, sons… you know, all those men in your life.

Studies are showing wearing a tight necktie can increase intracranial pressure and blood pressure around the eyes. This can lead to headaches, migraines, seizures, and fainting spells – all of which are not sexy, nor a good thing.

If you’re a man who’s gotta have his tie, make sure you have enough room to breathe, would you please?

Lower Your Heels

Here’s one I’ve been known to wear on occasion (what woman hasn’t), but the key to wearing these bad boys is just that – occasional usage. Much like the flip-flop usage, wearing heels can bring about painful foot problems like bunions, and hammertoes. They can also cause something called Morton’s Neuroma – a thickening of tissue between the third and fourth toes, leading to pain and numbness.

However, what’s most disturbing about heels is the fact they can cause some serious alterations to your posture, legs, and even your Achilles heel. The higher the heel is, the shorter your Achilles heel becomes, creating a host of pain and potential permanent shortening of the tendon. Knee joint pressure has also been sited to increase by 26% in women who wear or have worn high heels often, leading to osteoarthritis to the knee down the road.

I don’t know about you, but no amount of sex appeal in a pair of shoes is worth disfiguring my feet or losing feeling to my extremities. I plan to stick to my current fashion trend of wearing what’s comfortable, mixed with the occasional sexy heeled shoe from time to time.

Now that you’re aware of some of the ways your clothing and accessories are trying to maim you, keep them in mind the next time you’re getting dressed. Perhaps you’ll rethink your outfit, or at least modify it to be a bit more comfortable. Generally speaking, if you already know you’re slightly uncomfortable before you even leave the house, the chances are things will only get worse later on.
