Yohimbine is a prescription herbal medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction and promote weight loss. It is also used by women for general sexual problems, athletic performance, chest pain, high or low blood pressure, diabetic nerve pain and depression. Yohimbe is an evergreen tree found in parts of central and western Africa. The bark of the Yohimbe contains a chemical called Yohimbine, which is used to make the medication. Yohimbine works by blocking the alpha-2 adrenergic receptors that are responsible for inhibiting erections. It also counteracts with the sexual side effects of depression medications. This medication may also promote the release of nitric oxide which leads to the dilation of blood vessels and increases blood flow to the sexual organs. Yohimbine is also used as a veterinary drug that is used to reverse sedation in dogs and deer. It abbreviates the anesthesia and chemical restraint of xylazine.
