Pifeltro belongs to a class of anti-HIV drugs and is used to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1) infection in adults. HIV is a virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Pifeltro blocks an enzyme that HIV needs in order to make more virus. Pifeltro can help lower the amount of HIV in your blood (called your “viral load”) and increase your CD4+ T cell count which can make your immune system stronger. This may reduce your risk of death or getting infections that can happen when your immune system is weak. Pifeltro does not cure HIV or AIDS. It is important to keep taking this medication to control your HIV infection. Take Pifeltro exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take one tablet once a day by mouth at about the same time every day with or without food. Do not change your dose or stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor.
Pifeltro is manufactured by Merck and comes from Canada. The active ingredient in Pifeltro is Dorvirine. The generic equivalent of Pifeltro is not available. Pifeltro is available as tablets in the dosage form of 100 mg.
Stop taking Pifeltro and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:
• Changes in immune system. Your immune system may get stronger and begin to fight infections that have been hidden in your body for a long time. Sometimes symptoms can be severe, so if you develop high temperature (fever), joint or muscle pain, redness, rash, swelling or fatigue, or any new symptoms, contact your doctor right away.
• Severe allergic reactions
• Severe skin rash, mouth sores or blisters on your body
Less serious side effects include dizziness, abnormal dreams, difficulty in sleeping, nightmares, headache, sleepiness, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, feeling tired and week, depression. Please call your doctor if you have any further concerns or questions.
Do not use Pifeltro if you are allergic to doravirine. or any ingredients in the medication, are taking any of these medications: carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin (used to treat seizures), enzalutamide (used to treat prostate cancer), rifampin (used to treat tuberculosis), mitotane (used to treat cancer), St. John’s wort (a herbal product used to treat depression). Pifeltro may make you tired, dizzy or sleepy. This may affect your ability to drive and use machines. Before driving or using machines, wait until you are feeling well again. Pifeltro can interact with medications such as rifabutin (used to treat tuberculosis). If you also take the medicine rifabutin, take Pifeltro twice a day, about 12 hours apart, as prescribed by your doctor. Pifeltro can also interact with efavirenz, etravirine, darunavir, atazanavir and nevirapine. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is not known if Pifeltro can harm your unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while you are taking Pifeltro. You should not breastfeed if you are taking Pifeltro. You should also not breastfeed a baby if you are infected with HIV. This is because you can pass HIV to your baby. If you breastfeed a baby, they can get HIV from you.
