Micro K (Potassium)

Drug:Micro K ER Capsule
Dosage:8 meq (600mg)

Micro K (Potassium Chloride Extended Release Capsule) is an OTC medication used to prevent or to treat low blood levels of potassium (hypokalemia). Potassium levels can be low as a result of a disease or from taking certain medications, or after a prolonged illness with diarrhea or vomiting. Micro K contains potassium, which is a mineral found in many foods and is needed for several functions of your body, especially the beating of your heart. Micro K works by mimicking the naturally occurring potassium in the body, and raising blood levels of potassium.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Micro K (OTC) from Canada by Paladin. Micro K ER Capsules are available in the dosage of 8 meq (600 mg). The generic alternative, Potassium Chloride, is unavailable.

Common side effects of Micro K may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, stomach pain, or the appearance of a Micro K tablet in your stool. Contact your doctor if you notice any more serious side effects such as:

• Severe throat irritation;

• Signs of high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) (nausea, weakness, tingly feeling, chest pain, irregular heartbeats, loss of movement);

• Signs of stomach bleeding (bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, severe abdominal pain)

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you notice any serious side effects not listed above, or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Micro K if you are allergic to potassium chloride, or if you have high levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia). To make sure this medication is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, cirrhosis or other liver disease, an adrenal gland disorder, a large tissue injury such as a severe burn, severe dehydration, diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, stomach or intestinal bleeding, a blockage in your stomach or intestines, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or chronic diarrhea. It is not known if this medication will harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant to discuss any risks. This medication is passed into breastmilk, but is not known if this will harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding. Do not give this medication to a child without a doctor’s advice.

Avoid taking supplements or using other products that contain potassium without first asking your doctor. Salt substitutes or low-salt dietary products often contain potassium. If you take certain products together, you may be at risk for hyperkalemia. Micro K may interact with several medications, especially potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills) such as amiloride, triamterene, and spironolactone, ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors such as enalapril and lisinopril, and other vitamins that contain potassium. This is not a complete list of interactions, and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
