Hiprex (Methenamine Hippurate) is an antibiotic medication used to treat or prevent recurring bladder infections in adults and children over the age of 12 years old. It is usually given when other medicines have been unsuccessful in treating the bacterial infection. The usual recommended start dose is 1gm tablet.

Manufacturer Information

Hiprex is only available in its generic form of Methenamine Hippurate and currently comes from Turkey. It may come from other international countries. Hiprex is available in a 1gm dosage.

How can this medicine affect other medicines? Avoid taking sulphonamide antibiotics at the same as methenamine as there is a risk of crystal formation in the urine. Avoid using urinary alkalising agents (potassium or sodium citrate) which can alter the pH i.e. decrease the acidity of the urine.

Get medical help immediately if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking Hiprex.

• Difficulty breathing;
• Hives;
• Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat

Stop taking Hiprex and call your doctor at once if you have one of these serious side effects:

• New or worsening of bladder infection symptoms

Less serious side effects of Hiprex may include: painful or difficult urination, upset stomach, nausea, or rash.

Hiprex should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your medical history to be sure you can safely take Hiprex. Particularly if you have a history of: liver disease, asthma, allergy to aspirin, allergy to yellow food dye. You should not take Hiprex if you are allergic to Methenamine Hippurate, or if you have kidney disease, severe liver disease, if you take a sulfa drug, or if you are dehydrated. It is unknown how this medication may affect an unborn or nursing infant. It can make its way into breastmilk. Talk to your doctor about the risks if you are pregnant or nursing before taking Hiprex. There may be an interaction between Hiprex and other medications. Talk to your doctor about any medications or herbal supplements you are currently taking.
